Stephen Bambery

Dr Stephen Bambery is a leading refractive and cataract surgeon in Australia.After graduating from the University of Melbourne in 1978, he trained in Ophthalmology at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH) and later in the United Kingdom. Following this, Stephen held Ophthalmologist positions at the RVEEH, the Austin and Frankston Hospitals. He has also participated in medical visits to India and the South Pacific Islands of Kiribati, Tuvalu and the Solomon Islands.

In 1991, Stephen was one of the first surgeons in Melbourne to perform refractive laser surgery.

Stephen has been a regular speaker at refractive and cataract surgery conferences including the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology, as well as meetings in Indonesia, Poland and the United Kingdom.

Stephen is well respected amongst his peers and popular with his patients for his relaxed manner and punctuality. Outside ophthalmology, Stephen keeps active by cycling, and playing golf and tennis regularly.

Stephen is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.

Laurence Sullivan

Dr Laurie Sullivan is a fellowship-trained Corneal Specialist. He specialises in the medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the front of the eye, including small incision refractive Cataract Surgery, Corneal diseases (including Keratoconus Cross-linking, Transplantation Surgery, and Laser Refractive Surgery).

His public hospital teaching appointment was to the Corneal Clinic at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, where he was involved in training Ophthalmology registrars and fellows. Laurie has been a Clinical Associate at the University of Melbourne Department of Ophthalmology and the Centre for Eye Research Australia since 1994.

Laurie was an Examiner for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. He lectures at the University of Melbourne Department of Optometry and Visual Science. He has lectured internationally. Laurie has been involved in major research projects at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and has authored numerous scientific papers and book chapters

Laurie has worked overseas volunteering his time for third-world eye camps with the Hollows Foundation in both Nepal and Fiji. He conducted the firstever Ophthalmology fellowship examinations for Cambodia in 2009 and continues to both teach and examine in Cambodia. He also volunteers his time teaching in Vietnam. He is a founding member of the RANZCO International Development Committee and is also a member of the RANZCO Victorian state branch committee.

He is the Secretary/Treasurer of the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists and a director of LaserSight Victoria. He founded Bayside Eye Specialists in 2005.

Michael T Shiu

Dr Michael Shiu is an ophthalmologist dedicated to delivering comprehensive management of general eye diseases specialising in cataract, glaucoma and refractive laser surgery.

He has demonstrated a consistent history of academic and clinical excellence from obtaining the highest state grades for secondary education in South Australia and the Northern Territory in 1990 to receiving first class honours in medicine at the University of Melbourne where he also won multiple awards including the 1996 RACP Prize in Clinical Medicine, the highest award from the Royal Australian College of Physicians.

Michael founded his skills in general practice from 1997 to 2002, completing his qualification and becoming a fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2000. Having achieved a solid background in general medical practice, he commenced specialisation in ophthalmology at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and became the Glaucoma fellow at the same institute. Currently, he is a staff specialist working in the Glaucoma Clinic at RVEEH and article reviewer for the journal of Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology

Michael maintains his knowledge of international standards through regular attendance of ophthalmology and glaucoma conferences in the United Kingdom, European Union and United States. In March 2007 he volunteered his surgical skills in the Equal Health overseas aid program in Chennai, southern India and continues to dedicate himself to developing world eye care and program.

Michael's strong communication skills are further enhanced through his command of fluent spoken and written Cantonese and Mandarin.

Dermot Cassidy

Specialty: Cataract, Corneal and Laser Refractive Surgery

Dr Dermot Cassidy is an Ophthalmologist who is fellowship-trained in the medical and surgical treatment of Corneal Disease and Cataract surgery, including Laser Refractive Surgery and corneal transplantation. Dr Cassidy completed subspecialist fellowship training in Corneal surgery at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne before undertaking a further fellowship in Corneal, External eye disease and Laser Refractive Surgery at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom.

Dr Cassidy has an appointment as a consultant on the Corneal Unit and on the Acute Ophthalmology Service at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. He has presented at international meetings and published in his area of subspecialty in peer-reviewed journals. Dr Cassidy has also recently published a book entitled Descemet's Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty - A Manual regarding endothelial corneal transplantation.

When not at work Dermot can be found on the tennis court or spending time with his young family.

Georgia Cleary

Dr Georgia Cleary is a cornea specialist and eye surgeon. Her subspecialty interests include corneal refractive laser and cataract surgery. The goal of these procedures is to achieve the best possible visual outcomes for each individual based on their professional and lifestyle requirements.

She completed her undergraduate medical studies at the University of Western Australia and then trained as an Ophthalmologist in London, UK, in addition to completing a PhD exploring cataract surgery and intraocular lens design. She then undertook advanced subspecialty training in corneal surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, then the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital (RVEEH), Melbourne.

Dr Cleary is a consultant Ophthalmologist at RVEEH, working in the corneal service, and the surgical and acute ophthalmology services. She is actively involved in teaching and training, and undertakes research in the fields of corneal disease and cataract surgery outcomes. She has presented her research work internationally and has received numerous prizes for this work. She lectures regularly at the University of Melbourne for the School of Optometry and Visual Sciences.

Colby Hart

Dr. Colby Hart is a fellowship trained corneal specialist. He is proficient in the management of disease impacting the front of the eye, including keratoconus, corneal dystrophies and complex cataracts. He performs refractive laser surgery, as well as all forms of corneal transplantation, including endothelial grafts and keratoprosthesis surgery.

Colby completed his ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne where he currently works in both the cornea and general units. His cornea, refractive surgery and ocular surface disease fellowship was completed in Liverpool in the United Kingdom under the supervision of the revered Professor Stephen Kaye.

Colby has published and presented research projects in association with the Centre for Eye Research Australia, Lions Eye Bank and Liverpool University. He has been awarded multiple prizes at national and international conferences, and his current research interests surround the use of artificial intelligence in ophthalmology and projects that aim to increase corneal donation rates in Australia. He is a reviewer for the British Medical Journal of Ophthalmology.

When Colby isn’t working, he loves spending time with his beautiful wife and daughter. He is an avid Manchester United and Geelong Cats fan. He loves getting out for a round of golf, even if it involves spending a lot of the time in the trees!

Tim Steele

Refractive and Cataract Surgeon

Tim Steele is a comprehensive ophthalmologist with a special interest in cataract surgery, laser vision correction, pterygium surgery, eyelid and lacrimal surgery.

Tim’s practice also includes glaucoma management including MIGS (minimally invasive glaucoma surgery) and trabeculectomy.

Tim grew up in the Bayside suburbs of Melbourne and studied medicine at Monash University where he graduated with first class honours as the top final year student. He completed his ophthalmology training at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in East Melbourne.

Tim has undertaken further subspeciality training in oculoplastic surgery in the United Kingdom and holds postgraduate qualifications in refractive surgery from the University of Sydney.

Tim is actively involved in the RANZCO vocational training program, teaching trainee ophthalmologists in clinics and in surgery. He holds public appointments at The Alfred Hospital and Albury Wodonga Health.
