Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK)

Addressing issues on the outside of your cornea

Laser surgery for corneal artefacts

Using a laser to remove scars and other tissue.

If you present to your LASERSIGHT doctors with corneal scars, corneal dystrophy, recurrent corneal erosion or similar conditions, we may prescribe phototherapeutic keratectomy, or PTK. This is where we use short bursts of extremely fine laser pulses to remove the damaged tissue and smooth the cornea underneath.

Expertly restoring the surface of your cornea.

Your LASERSIGHT surgical team brings years of experience in utilising these tiny laser pulses to clear away damaged or injured tissue and leave your underlying corneal structure intact and smooth.

Experienced Surgeons and Advanced Technology

The laser technology we use operates in the tiny nanometer range, and our experience with this technology extends over many years. We’ve successfully completed operations like your thousands of times.

Comprehensive Support and Follow-Up Care

From your initial consultation to long-term follow-up, we’re with you every step of the way, providing comprehensive care to make sure your eye care journey is smooth and successful.

Do you need PTK?

Personalised Care, Tailored Vision Solutions

PTK is specific to a range of disorders and conditions that affect the outer layer of the corner. These range from epithelial thinning to corneal scarring, corneal dystrophy or recurrent corneal erosion. Removing the affected tissue is the fastest, safest and most effective remedy.

Procedure Time

As a laser procedure, the laser is in operation for only a few seconds, and the entire procedure can take less than 20 minutes per eye. The entire procedure will take less than 40 minutes from preparation to post-op care, and you’ll be ready for pick up within two hours.

Typical Results

If the condition being treated was affecting you vision (blurring or interfering with your sight) you may not notice any significant change. However your eye health will improve, and the chances of the condition recurring are reduced.

Recovery Time

Removing unwanted tissue from your eye’s surface can leave them feeling sore, and affect your vision for a few days. We’ll place contact lenses that act as a bandage, which stay in place for a few days, and provide antiseptic eye drops for aftercare. Within a week or two you should be back to normal.
